At the invitation of the All-People’s Congress (APC) Diaspora 6th Region Women’s Congress, led by comrade Madam Cassandra Kenny, Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, on 7th September 2024, joined the APC Diaspora 6th Region Women’s Congress Launch and Achievement Awards Dinner.
The inspirational event, held in Lanham, Maryland, USA, was attended by APC Women’s Leaders from across the Diaspora 6th Region including representatives from APC Australia, Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom and from APC branches in New Jersey, Minnesota, Arizona, Houston and from several other states.
In her keynote address, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr spoke on the theme of the Awards Dinner “Women Supporting Women – the Power of Collaboration”. She emphasized the crucial role of women in leadership, stressing that women’s equal participation in political and public life is essential for national growth.
In her impactful statement, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr described women as educators, vision setters, mountain climbers and caregivers. She likened women to individual pieces of coal burning on their own and said that through collaboration, bringing the individual pieces of coal together, women could ignite a burning fire that would set alight development in families, the APC party and the nation as a whole.
