Mayor Aki-Sawyerr Celebrates International Women’s Day in Kenema District

9/3/2025

It was a real pleasure to spend International Women’s Day in Kenema District with members the APC Women’s Congress from across the country. With the participation of women leaders from remote constituencies to those leading districts and regions, the event provided a platform for discussing the important role of women in politics, the challenges we face and opportunities for “accelerating action” – the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day.

Conversations on the sidelines of the event were incredibly uplifting as we made new friends, strengthened existing relationships, and encouraged each other to continue to strive for greater participation in politics at all levels.

Freetown City Council Deputy Mayor, Kweku Lisk Esq delivered the “He for She Statement” and he made me proud! His appreciation of and support for my leadership has positively impacted service delivery at Freetown City Council. As this is the month of Ramadan, together we made a donation of 150 bags of rice, 150 bags of onions and 150 gallons of oil to the Women’s Congress for distribution to women leaders in the 17 districts. We also donated an additional 100 bags of rice, 100 bags of onions and 100 gallons of oil to the Kenema District Executive for distribution to constituencies and wards.

International Women’s Day is celebrated once a year but the aspiration of increasing women’s participation and forging gender parity must be recognized all year round. I firmly believe that when we release the potential of our women, we will unlock and crystallize the potential of our nation.
