Community engagements with Kroo Bay on coastal flooding

2/8/2024

As the heavy rains continue and the risk of significant coastal flooding increases, I engaged members of the Kroo Bay community today. We will be demolishing large structures primarily built by “landlords” on illegal “banking” and replacing them with 75,000 mangroves. The “banking” is created from waste deposits which pollute the ocean and end up on our beaches. Demolition of the identified structures will be done next Friday 9th August as FCC continues to collaborate with other MDAs including the Ministries of Environment, Local Government and Lands, NDMA and SLRA. The planting of mangroves will start in the following week as part of #FreetownTheTreeTown. Over 200 Kroo Bay community members will be employed for an initial period of one year to plant and monitor the growth of the 75,000 mangroves!
