Yesterday’s African Urban Heat Summit was a landmark event for Freetown! Co-hosted by Climate Resilience for All (CRA) the one day Summit brought together mayors, vice-governors and technical representatives from Monrovia and Paynesville (Liberia), Conakry (Guinea), Accra (Ghana), Kanifing (The Gambia), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), and Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), along with Local Council leaders from Sierra Leone, diplomats, development partners, MDA representatives, members of the APC National Executive and a cross section of Freetonians.
Recognizing the threat of extreme heat, Freetown City Council, with CRA supporting our Chief Heat Officer, has developed a Heat Action Plan. It was exciting to have CRA announce the availability of grants that will enable other Local Councils to immediately apply for funding to support the development of their own heat action plans. A highlight of yesterday’s Summit was the launching of the Freetown Heat Action Plan by the Honorable Vice President Dr Mohammed Juldeh Jalloh who also delivered the Summit keynote address.
