Yesterday I was really pleased to serve as the keynote speaker at the official launch of the Youth Climate Council Freetown Chapter! This is in response to the urgent need for meaningful youth engagement in addressing the pressing issues of climate change and sustainability in our city.
Freetown faces unique climate challenges, from rising temperatures and deforestation to flooding and rising sea levels. The Council will ensure that climate action is developed through a youth lens, leveraging the creativity and determination of local youth.
The Youth Climate Council will serve as a hub for youth involvement in policy process at city level. The Youth Climate Council will be managed by a Secretariat led by a Chapter Focal Point selected through a competitive application process which will be overseen by the Freetown City Council Freetown. Freetown City Council and the Youth Climate Council National Secretariat will then continue to provide oversight of the Youth Climate Council’s activities.
Empowering young people to lead the Youth Climate Council Freetown Chapter will create a ripple effect of change that will not only benefit Freetown but also contribute to global climate solutions.
